Description

This easy BBQ sauce recipe is our quick go-to! Ready in 15 minutes. Chipotle peppers pack the heat and BBQ flavour! Ketchup & mustard free.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups crushed or stewed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp vegan worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp liquid smoke
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (about 2 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp salt

*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!

Instructions

*Watch the video below to see us make this BBQ sauce for our Ultimate BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich!

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. When your sauce starts to lightly bubble, reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on for 10 minutes.
  2. Blend the sauce using an immersion blender or stand up blender for a smooth texture and enjoy!
  3. Keeps well in a sealed container in the fridge for up to one week. I haven’t tried keeping it longer but you could try to freeze it in ice cube molds to preserve it longer.

Notes

*Cost Comparison: CAD $4.29 for 500ml ($0.86/100ml) vs CAD $0.70-$1.11/100ml for most store-bought BBQ sauce.

*If you don’t have chipotle peppers on hand you can substitute the heat with 3 tsp chilli garlic sauce and ½ tsp or more cayenne pepper. About half of a red Thai chilli pepper would work too!

*Store leftover chipotle peppers and adobo sauce in a sealable jar in your fridge. They keep well for 1 – 2 months. Likewise, freeze leftover tomato paste in a freezer safe jar and scoop out what you need whenever you need a tablespoon or so!
