Description

Quick and thrifty vegan “bacon bits” packed with smoky “meaty” flavour! These chewy sun-dried tomato bits make the perfect salad topper!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup dry packed sun-dried tomatoes, chopped (see notes for oil-packed)
  • 3/4 tsp tamari or soy sauce
  • 1/4 tsp liquid smoke

*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!

Instructions

  1. Slice your sun-dried tomatoes into small “bits”.
  2. Transfer to a small bowl. Drizzle with tamari and liquid smoke. Stir to coat and enjoy.

Notes

*Approximate Cost: CAD $1.01

*Cost Comparison: For a 100g package of real bacon bits our cost would be CAD $5.49 – $6.49. 100g of dry packed sun-dried tomatoes costs us CAD $3.52. Adding 1 ½ tsp tamari and ¾ tsp liquid smoke to get the flavour brings the cost to CAD $3.68. That’s a savings of at least CAD $1.81.

*Oil packed sun-dried tomatoes have a softer texture but they can certainly work. Remove them from the oil and let the excess drip off. You can place them in the oven to crisp up if you desire, just watch them closely so they don’t burn. Season them according to the recipe above.
