Ingredients
We love making our hot chocolate with plant milk for a really creamy taste but feel free to use water instead!
For this peppermint hot chocolate we use:
- Oat milk for the creaminess (but feel free to use your preferred plant milk).
- Cocoa powder for that rich chocolate taste and colour.
- Dairy-free chocolate chips for the added sweetness and smooth chocolate taste.
- And a dash of peppermint extract for that festive mint flavour!
We find using semi-sweet dark chocolate chips makes this hot chocolate sweet enough for us but feel free to sweeten it with a dash of maple syrup if you’d like!
Make This Vegan Peppermint Hot Chocolate
- Grab a small pot.
- Heat your milk over medium low heat.
- Stir occasionally until steam starts to rise from the milk .

PrintVegan Peppermint Hot Chocolate – Quick & Cozy
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 2 servings 1x
- Diet: Vegan
Description
This vegan peppermint hot chocolate is ready in minutes with ingredients you likely have in your pantry! Make a mug of cozy festive comfort!
Ingredients
- 3 cups oat milk (or plant milk of choice, we like oat or soy)
- 1 ½ tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tbsp dairy free chocolate chips
- ¼ tsp pure peppermint extract (or more to taste)
- optional: sweetener of choice
- optional: top with crushed candy cane and 5 minute whipped cream
*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!
Instructions
- Using a small pot, heat the milk over medium low heat stirring occasionally.
- Once you see steam rising from the milk whisk in the cocoa powder until dissolved.
- Then whisk in the chocolate chips until melted. I like to rotate between a whisk and a wooden spoon to make sure the chocolate isn’t sticking to the bottom or sides of the pot.
- Whisk in the peppermint extract and give it a careful taste to see if you want to add a sweetener. Depending on how dark your cocoa powder and chocolate chips are you may want to add a sweetener to taste. I would add ½ – 1 tablespoon maple syrup to start but feel free to use whichever sweetener you prefer.
- Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream and crushed candy cane if desired!
Notes
Approximate Cost: CAD $2.37 ($1.18/serving) using an artificial peppermint extract and CAD $2.46 ($1.23/serving) using a pure peppermint extract vs. at least $2 for a peppermint hot chocolate from a cafe.
The potency of the peppermint flavour will likely change based on the extract you have so feel free to start with ¼ teaspoon and add more if desired.
Feel free to replace the milk with water if you prefer a less creamy hot chocolate.
If you want to try using fresh mint leaves you could add all the ingredients with the fresh mint leaves to your blender to break down the leaves. If your blender can handle hot liquids you could heat the milk and then blend everything together and it will froth the hot chocolate nicely. Otherwise, blend first and then transfer to a pot and warm it through.

how many calories in a mug?
Kathryn Alexandre
We haven’t focused on collecting the calorie information for our recipes yet but it is something that we can keep in mind for the future. This recipe is for two servings and I know some other visitors have used free apps to calculate the calorie count. The chocolate chips make this drink sweeter and richer tasting but you could always omit them and use only unsweetened cocoa powder for the chocoaltey flavour. I hope that helps a bit and let me know if you give it a try! Thank you!

I really like the combo of cocoa powder and chocolate chips. It makes it way more delicious. And I’m a peppermint fanatic so that’s always a win in my books. Cheers!
