Peanut butter filled dates with almonds in the centre are scattered on a white tray. Loose almonds, a bowl of medjool dates, and a bowl of peanut butter are also pictured.

Hands down. Greatest. Most favourite. Mind blowingly good. Fastest. Simplest. Snack. In. The. World! Have I convinced you? Peanut butter filled dates make everyday a better day.

Better Than A Brownie... yes, I said it.
Soft
Gooey
Peanut Buttery
Caramely
Naturally Super Sweet
No Fuss, 2 Ingredient (3 if you add the almond), Fastest Snack Ever!

A hand spoons peanut butter into the centre of a medjool date. A bowl of other dates, loose almonds, and a bowl of peanut butter surround the hands.

What Makes These So Tasty

Beautiful, nature's caramel, that's what. Medjool Dates!

Let me know in the comments below if these soft, gooey, caramel flavoured, sweet dried fruits are a constant in your pantry or fridge!

The first time I ate a medjool date whole; like this and not blended into a dessert, was only a few years ago. I was at a dinner party and a friend brought a container of dates for dessert. I skeptically looked at the container of shrivelled, strange looking things, and asked what they were. He said to me, "you've never had a date?", he took out the pit, and handed it to me...

The rest is history. I couldn't (and I still can't) believe how incredibly sweet these brown, shrivelled things are.

My idea of dessert before my tastebuds were awoken to the magic of medjool dates; was a brownie... I would honestly... yes, I'm going to say it... I would take these over a brownie any day!

Oh... and peanut butter... because peanut butter makes everything better.

Why Are Dates So Sweet

They're a fruit.

The shrivelled appearance is because dates are most typically bought dried. Just like a dried apricot, or cranberry, or any other dried fruit; the moisture is removed, shrivelling the skin of the fruit, and leaving behind all the natural sugars.

Bon Appetit has a funny article on; what dates are, and why they are so awesome. And for 8 Proven Health Benefits of Dates open up this Healthline article.

Although dates are a dessert packed with healthy properties, they are very high in natural sugars and fibre so... I don't recommend sitting down to a tub of medjool dates. I typically have one of these tasty treats a day and I've learned that my stomach can only handle a couple in a day.

Different Kinds Of Dates

There are different kinds of dates! We typically have both Medjool dates and Deglet Noor Dates in our fridge.

Top down view of large medjool dates and their packaging. Next to; smaller, lighter in colour, deglet nour dates and their packaging.

These Medjool dates are:
Larger
Darker in colour,
Have the pit inside,
Are softer,
And sweeter.

Deglet Noor (or nour) dates are:
Pitted,
Smaller,
Lighter in colour,
Not as soft,
And slightly less sweet.
They are also lower in price. So...

We use the less expensive deglet noor dates in our baking and reserve the decadent medjool dates for snacking!

Tip For Storing Dates

The fridge is your friend. We store our dates in the fridge to help prolong their already long shelf-life.

You may notice that the exterior of your dates look slightly white. Not to worry, this is most likely sugar that has crystallized and risen to the outermost edges of the date.

But... they are a fruit, and they do grow on trees. So, it is always a good idea to peak inside the date when you slice it to remove the pit and make sure there isn't anything unwanted in there.

Recipe Cost

One date, filled with peanut butter, and with a raw almond in the centre; costs us: CAD $0.35.

Considering these fulfill my craving for a dessert... $0.35 is pretty darn good! Much quicker, thriftier, and even tastier than a brownie.

These would make a great, simple snack, or dessert to bring along to a family gathering!
