Ingredients For Strawberry Jam Overnight Oats

We love adding ground flaxseed to these oats for an extra boost of nutrition in the morning! The mild, slightly nutty taste of the flaxseeds pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the jam and the toasted almonds!

We always have flaxseed in our pantry but if you aren't familiar with this ingredient you can jump to Healthline's article on the top 10 benefits of this "super food"!

Top down view of ground flaxseeds in a small glass bowl with quick oats, maple syrup, and a small carafe of milk also displayed on a white tray.

A dash of maple syrup can be added to sweeten the oats. Feel free to omit the extra sweetness if you like to stir your overnight oats all together and spread the jam all the way through!

Did you know you can use watermelon rind to make a super tasty jammy fruit sauce? For this recipe we've used our favourite Watermelon Rind Strawberry Sauce but feel free to use any jam or yogurt you have on hand!

Fresh or frozen berries can be used for this recipe. *IF you are using frozen fruit just make sure that you decrease the amount of milk added to your oats. As the fruit defrosts it will release extra water into the mixture.

And for the topping... toasted almonds! I'm always blown away by how much toasting nuts boosts their flavour. I highly recommend taking these to the next level!

How To Make Overnight Oats

I LOVE how easy these are!

  • Just mix your oats and ground flaxseed in a mason jar or bowl with a lid.
  • Stir in the milk.
  • Layer in the jam.
    • If you add it right away it will likely sink a bit through the oats. If you want a really clean line between the layers I suggest letting the oats soak up the milk a bit before spooning in the jam.
  • Top with diced strawberries.
  • And either sprinkle with toasted almonds now or wait until the morning to add them so they stay firmer.

Recipe Cost

These overnight oats will cost us roughly CAD $2.15 per serving using jam purchased at our local grocery store.

BUT... using our homemade watermelon rind strawberry sauce makes these oats so much thriftier!

Even at $2.15 this loaded and extra tasty overnight oats recipe certainly saves compared to buying an oatmeal from a cafe when we are in a rush.

Description

Sweet & creamy strawberry jam overnight oats make a perfect start for your day! Try them with our favourite watermelon rind strawberry sauce!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • ½ cup quick oats (or rolled oats)
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • ¾ cup oat milk (use a little less if you want firmer oats)
  • ¾ tbsp maple syrup (more or less to taste)
  • ½ - ¾ cup diced strawberry
  • ⅓ cup strawberry watermelon rind fruit sauce (see note if using alternative jam)
  • optional: top with toasted sliced almonds!

*Fresh Ingredients you need that are not part of our pantry and freezer tips.

Instructions

  1. Add oats and ground flaxseed to a medium sized mason jar or bowl with a lid. Stir to combine.
  2. Add just under ¾ cup plant milk of choice and maple syrup. Stirring to combine with the oats.
  3. If jam is added right away it will likely sink a bit through the oats. If you want a distinctive line just wait a little while until the oats have firmed up. (If using a conventional jam with more sugar, use just 1-2 tbsp).
  4. Top with diced strawberry and any toppings you desire. *To toast sliced almonds, sprinkle them on a hot dry pan. Let them toast, stirring, for about 3 minutes or until nicely browned and fragrant. Granola, other nuts, seeds, and of course… peanut butter make great toppings! If adding nuts or granola they will soften if they sit in the jar overnight. If you want the toppings to be crunchy, keep them separate until the morning.
  5. Secure the lid on the jar or bowl and leave in the fridge overnight or for at least 1 hour. These keep well for a few days if you want to make them ahead of time!

Notes

Approximate Cost: Roughly CAD $2.15 using store-bought strawberry jam. Will be less using our low-waste watermelon rind strawberry fruit sauce!

If using a conventional jam with more sugar use just 1-2 tbsp.

If you like really firm, crunchy oats you can try quick cooking steel cut oats. They will likely need at least 8 hours to soften and because of their weight I like to combine the oats and milk and wait a few hours. The oats can sink in the jar leaving a layer of milk sitting on top. Giving them a stir after a few hours will encourage the milk to be fully incorporated and then you can add your toppings. True steel cut oats (not the quick cooking variety) may not soften enough in overnight oats.
