I love making a weekly batch of chia pudding to have on hand for that mid-afternoon need for a snack. You can enjoy this simple chia pudding recipe as is, or it can be a great base for customizing with your favourite ingredients! It's:

Fun
Filling
A great boost of protein
As sweet as you like
Customized how you like
Great to take on the go
And so quick and easy to make!

Ingredients For Simple Chia Pudding

This simple chia pudding recipe is just 3 ingredients!

Top down view of black chia seeds in a small dish; with a whisk, a measuring cup of milk, and a small dish of maple syrup on top a white tray.

All you need are:

  1. Chia Seeds (you can use white, black, or a mixture of both).
    • You can even use ground chia seeds if that is what you have. You will just have a less clumpy pudding!
  2. Plant milk of your choice
  3. And any sweetener you prefer.
    • I use 1-2 tablespoon maple syrup but feel free to omit the sweetener, use any liquid sweetener you have, or add fresh fruit to the mixture for a natural sweetness!

How To Make Chia Pudding

You really only need about 5 minutes and one bowl or jar!

  • I use ½ cup chia seeds
  • To 2 cups plant milk

Feel free to add more milk for a thinner consistency.

Side view of the seeds and milk being whisked in a clear container. Strawberries and jam are visible in the background.
  1. Simply add your milk to a bowl or jar.
  2. Add the chia seeds and any sweetener you prefer.
  3. And stir!

Stirring the seeds quite quickly after being added to the milk is best to ensure that the seeds don't clump together. Chia seeds will absorb the liquid and create a gelatinous coating that makes the seeds easier to break down in your body and digest.

If you are new to the wonders of chia seeds, Healthline has a great article on what chia seeds are, how to add them to your diet, and the many health benefits!

After combining the seeds with the milk:

  • Allow the seeds to thicken in the milk for 10-15 minutes.
    • You can place the bowl or jar in the fridge and give it one more stir after 15 minutes to make sure no clumps have formed.
  • Now... your chia pudding is quite thick and ready to enjoy after just 15 minutes OR...
  • Store it in the fridge for up to a week!
    • Your pudding will continue to thicken a bit more in the fridge and if you want to thin it out a bit just stir in a bit more milk when you go to enjoy it!

Adding Flavourings To Chia Pudding

Side view of set and thickened chia pudding in a see through container with measurements. The pudding reaches the 2 cups line.
  • Feel free to add a POWDER into the pudding like COCOA powder or MATCHA green tea powder!
    • It is best to dissolve the powder in a couple tablespoons of warm milk or water, add that to the cold milk you are using for the pudding, and then add your chia seeds in. If you add powder straight to the cold milk it will likely clump and not fully dissolve.
  • Add in any fresh or dried FRUIT you'd like!
  • Or NUTS and other SEEDS to boost the protein even more!
  • Even stir in a NUT or SEED BUTTER or use a JAM for more flavour.
  • And sprinkle CHOCOLATE CHIPS because they go great in anything!

This simple chia pudding recipe is easy to adapt to your liking! You can add those flavourings in when you make the full batch OR portion it into smaller jars and leave some room to add whatever cravings you're having when you go to enjoy it!

Recipe Cost

Two cups (500 grams) of this simple chia pudding recipe costs us approximately: CAD $1.95.

We tend to get 4 servings out of this amount and portion the pudding into smaller 4 oz jars, adding in whatever other toppings we feel like!

Considering purchasing a single chia pudding cup from our local grocery store or a cafe would cost us roughly $2.50 - $6.50... this homemade simple chia pudding recipe is pretty thrifty!

So let us know in the comments below how you like this simple pudding! And tell us if you have it for breakfast or for a snack and how you make it your own!

If you are wondering if you can turn this into a more decadent dessert pudding... try adding some chocolate, blending down the seeds, and topping it with some whip like we do for our Quick, From Your Pantry Chocolate Pudding!

Description

Simple chia pudding recipe for a filling, high protein snack! Mix chia seeds with milk, sweeten as desired, & let thicken for 15 minutes!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • ½ cup chia seeds (80g)
  • 2 cup plant milk of choice
  • 1 - 2 tablespoon maple syrup

For individual 4 oz servings:

  • 4 tbsp chia pudding
  • 3 tbsp watermelon rind strawberry fruit sauce (or some jam of choice)
  • 1 fresh strawberry, sliced
  • 1 tsp toasted coconut flakes

*All the ingredients for the base chia pudding recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!

Instructions

  1. Add the chia seeds to a medium sized bowl and pour in the plant milk. Quickly use a whisk or fork to disperse the seeds right away. The seeds will want to clump immediately so make sure to not let them sit in the milk. *Alternatively, you can do this in a jar with a lid and shake it well!
  2. Stir in the maple syrup. Use more if desired or keep the pudding unsweetened (if your plant milk is sweetened you may find you don’t need extra sweetness). I tend to keep mine mildly sweetened since I will add jam or fresh fruit when I go to enjoy it.
  3. Allow it to sit and thicken in the fridge for 15 minutes. Give it another stir and enjoy right away or store in the fridge until you are ready to scoop some out for a snack!
  4. Feel free to add in any other flavourings. Try dissolving 2 - 2 ½ tsp  of cocoa or matcha powder in a couple tablespoons of warm water or milk before you add in the chia seeds (adding the powder directly to cold milk will often make it clump and not dissolve properly). Once your chia seeds are mixed in, feel free to add dried fruit, nuts, other seeds, nut butter, jam, chocolate chips... go wild and customize it to your liking!
  5. If you are looking for a more decadent dessert pudding, jump over to our easy Blended Chocolate Chia Pudding!

Notes

Approximate cost: CAD $1.95 for 500 grams (2 cups) of pudding which we portion out into 4 servings! A single chia pudding cup purchased from our local grocery store or a cafe would cost us anywhere from $2.50 - $6.50.

I haven't made it yet but was wanting to use regular milk instead of plant based.

Absolutely! Any milk will work. You can keep the measurements the same. You can even stir in some yogurt for a thicker, creamier texture if you like!
