Do you love the unique taste and slower, calm inducing release of caffeine from this powerful green tea powder? Do you love the price a teensy bit less? Try this homemade matcha latte instead, and enjoy your perfect cup of matcha anytime you want… for much, much less!
This matcha latte is:
Ready In 5-8 Minutes
Lightly Sweetened
Oh So Calming
And At Least Half The Price
Recipe Cost
Our At Home Matcha Latte costs: CAD $1.08 compared to CAD $4-$7 for a latte purchased from a cafe. Certainly worth it in my books!
Buying Matcha Powder
Matcha powder may not be in your local grocery store but it is quite easy to find if you know where to look.
Buying matcha powder from a wholesale store (like Costco in Canada) will likely offer the best price. We buy our matcha wholesale. Although it costs CAD $19.99 for a 250g tin, the savings per latte (1 teaspoon matcha powder = about 2 grams) are worth it!
You will likely, also find matcha powder at your local bulk store. Our recipe with the bulk price is CAD $1.30 per latte.
And you can certainly find it in any health food store. Our price using a more luxury brand of matcha comes to, CAD $2.12 per latte.
So, even the priciest option for our at home version is still half the price!
Matcha Whisks
If you love your matcha and you know you’re going to be whisking up a cup relatively often, a matcha whisk is worth it. It’s the traditional whisk used for the delicate powder and it will ensure you have a clump free, frothy matcha.
BUT… you can certainly make a very tasty mug of matcha using a standard wire whisk.
3Leaf has a great blog on matcha whisks and their proper use.
How To Make A Matcha Latte
We love how simple it is!
- Heat Your Milk On The Stove-Top
- Combine Matcha, Maple Syrup, And Hot Water
- Pour Your Warm Milk Over Your Matcha
- And Enjoy!
If you like your latte with some foam you can use an immersion blender, a milk frother, or even transfer the warm milk to your stand-up blender to get your desired frothiness.
I don’t know about you, but I’m already having dreams of a comforting bowl of lemon chia oatmeal and a latte tomorrow morning!

- Total Time: 8 minutes
- Yield: 1 Serving 1x
- Diet: Vegan
Description
Love matcha but don’t love the price of buying your latte out? Whisk up this tasty homemade matcha latte in your own kitchen and save!
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cup soy milk (or plant milk of choice)
- 1 ¼ tsp matcha powder*
- ¾ – 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 tbsp hot water
*Ingredients you need that are not part of our pantry and freezer tips.
Instructions
- Measure out your milk (you can pour the cold milk into your mug of choice if you’d like to make the exact amount you need). Add your milk to a medium pot and heat over medium low heat for 5 minutes or so. Stir frequently.
- While your milk warms up, add 1 ¼ teaspoon matcha powder to the bottom of your mug. Add maple syrup and hot tap water and use a matcha whisk or regular whisk to combine. When your matcha no longer has any clumps and looks frothy you’re good to go!
- When your milk is warm you will start seeing vapours of steam coming up. You don’t want your milk to boil, otherwise you can get an unpleasant skin of burnt milk on your latte.
- Remove the milk from the heat and use an immersion blender or other frothing device to froth it up, if desired.
- Pour the warm milk into your mug with the matcha mixture. Pour half way and twirl the mug a bit to make sure the two mix well, then top with the remaining milk and foam! Sip away!
Notes
*Cost Comparison: CAD $1.08 wholesale matcha, $1.30 bulk price, $2.12 health store. Vs. cafe $4-7.
*Feel free to add any additional flavourings like cinnamon or vanilla extract if desired.
*If using a matcha whisk, move the whisk in a “M” shape for best results as opposed to a circular whisking motion.
*If your stand blender can handle hot liquids you can carefully transfer the latte to your blender to froth it up and then pour into your mug.

I can’t believe I haven’t made this at home before. I found matcha for a good price at my wholesale store and it’s definitely cheaper than buying it out. I think I might even buy a milk frother just for these! Thanks for the inspo.

Ah yes I hope you do buy one! I’ve been resisting the urge to get one but I’m sure it fulfills that cafe feel even more! I’m glad it will save you a few dollars making it at home and you love it just as much! Thank you for the lovely star rating too. Enjoy!
