Jackfruit
Living in Canada, we don’t exactly have jackfruit growing on our trees. But thanks to the global food market… we have jackfruit in a can. If you don’t have access to fresh jackfruit either, you’re looking for these sweet pieces of ripe jackfruit canned in syrup.
This recipe actually came to fruition because I bought the wrong type of jackfruit! I was intending to buy, “Young Green Jackfruit”, which can be shredded to have a “pulled pork” texture and used in savoury dishes like our Spicy Chipotle Pulled Jackfruit!
Instead, I tried to shred these plump pieces of ripe jackfruit and ended up with a very mushy, albeit tasty, “pulled pork”.
For more info on this incredible and versatile fruit read, loveFOOD’s post, “A Complete Guide To Jackfruit”.
You always learn from your mistakes though right? And this one happened to result in this wonderfully tasty tropical jackfruit smoothie bowl!
How Does Jackfruit Taste
These sweet pieces of ripe jackfruit are often described as tasting like a combination of ripe banana, mango, pineapple, and honey.
That means, it pairs perfectly with the other ingredients in this tropical smoothie bowl… and if you don’t have one or the other… the jackfruit can make up for its flavour!
Recipe Cost
This smoothie bowl recipe costs us approximately: CAD $5.29 ($2.65/serving).
If we were to purchase smoothies out, they would typically cost at least, $4 – $6 dollars each; and $6 – $12 for a smoothie bowl with toppings.
A 530ml can of ripe jackfruit in syrup usually has about 10 pieces of the large fruit and costs us: CAD $2.99.
- Although this recipe calls for 1 whole can, we typically make it with only half the can. We reserve the rest of the fruit (with its syrup) in a mason jar for another smoothie. We also tend to use only ½ cup of pineapple instead of 1 cup. Since this smoothie packs a ton of delightful sweetness you can try halving those ingredients. Your smoothies will be slightly smaller, but the leftover jackfruit means you can have it again the next day! Oh… and you’ll save roughly $2.07!

*Use coconut water in place of regular filtered water for extra tropical flavour. We love to use reserved coconut water from recipes like our 5 Minute Whipped Cream for smoothies!
