Ok... do you think we've lost it a bit? Chocolate, peanut butter, banana, berries... and beets? But trust us! My five-year-old niece said it perfectly, "tastes like chocolate candy". And it does! I would drink this chocolate beet smoothie every day... and I very nearly do!

If you've read our post about how to roast beets you will know that Bryan is quite in love with this vibrant and sweet root vegetable. He quite firmly believes that beets will work in anything and really... he's been pretty darn right so far!

When he said he was going to toss a beet in a smoothie - I most likely (not so subtly) wrinkled my nose, raised an eyebrow, and thought "eeck". Well, wouldn't you know... it:

Tastes like candy
Like a chocolate berry milkshake
It's thick
Creamy
Frosty
Refreshing
And it satisfies all my chocolate cravings!

Ingredients

Top down view of a roasted beet in a glass dish with bananas, cocoa powder, peanut butter, cherries, dates, and cinnamon sticks scattered around.

You get sweetness, vibrant colour, and heftiness from the beet.

  • Creamy, frostiness from frozen banana.
  • Fruitiness, colour, and freshness from cherries, plums, or berries.
  • A caramel flavour from dates.
  • Thick peanut buttery goodness from, well, PB.
  • Chocolate dreaminess from cocoa powder.
  • And maple syrup, cinnamon, and oat milk to bring it all home.

Can You Use Raw Beet

You could definitely use a raw beet BUT it will be harder to blend as cooking the beet softens it. And your smoothie may have a chunkier, less smooth consistency.

Cooking beets transforms them from a sweet but crunchy root vegetable to a silky smooth easily blend-able beauty of an ingredient!

We have a constant supply of roasted beets in our fridge. We buy 5 or 6 at a time. Roast them, peel them, store them in an air-tight container and pull from them all week! Take a gander at our how-to and let us know in the comments below if these gems become a staple for you too!

Recipe Cost

This chocolate beet smoothie costs us approximately: CAD $4.48 ($2.24/serving). It's a pretty packed smoothie and still offers quite a bit of savings vs. buying a CAD $4-$6 smoothie out.

We have also been known to make this smoothie as a dessert in the evening because it's honestly that tasty!

So go for it! Be bold like Bryan. Toss a silky sweet beet into your blender and let us know if you agree with my niece. Does it taste like "chocolate candy" to you?

Description

Chocolate Beet Smoothie? Oh yes! Sweet beet pairs perfectly with chocolate, peanut butter, and berries! Trust us, you can't beat it!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 medium sized cooked beet*
  • 2 pitted dates (soften in warm water if they are too hard, see notes)
  • 1 ½ tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 cup oat milk (the less milk the thicker and more frozen the consistency will be)
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 2 cups frozen plums, cherries, or other berries

*Fresh ingredients you need that are not part of our pantry and freezer tips.

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients to your blender. (Start with less milk if you want to make this a smoothie bowl. Only add as much milk as needed to help it blend for a thicker consistency).
  2. Pulse to break down the frozen fruit, then blend.
  3. For a smoothie bowl, top as desired! Chocolate shavings, fresh berries, coconut, nuts, chia seeds, and of course a drizzle of peanut butter.

Notes

*Cost Comparison: CAD $4.48 ($2.24/serving) vs. $4-$6 each if purchased out.

*To make this a smoothie bowl, we use ¼ - ½ cup milk. Just enough for the smoothie to blend but less milk keeps it as thick as possible.

*You can use a raw beet but it will have a chunkier texture and be less sweet. Cooked beets blend down smoothly and their sweetness really comes out. See our post for how to roast beets.

*If you’re using deglet noor dates and they are a little hard just soften them in warm water for about 5 minutes. That will ensure they blend down and you don’t get chunks of dates (although tasty!) in your smoothie. Alternatively, you can omit the dates and still make a super tasty smoothie!

Delicious. May have been even better if I'd used a measuring spoon instead of just eyeballing the ingredients. It's good to have another option for my beets. Thank you, Katherine.

hahaha well I'm glad you liked it and I'm sure that even with eyeballing the measurements it tasted pretty delicious. I'm so glad you liked this one and have found a new way to use beets! I never would have thought a smoothie with roasted beets would be my favourite smoothie flavour but it still is! Thank you for the wonderful star rating as well!
