These grilled mushroom "steak" strips are our go-to for adding huge flavour to fajitas and Asian inspired bowls. With a spicy and sweet sesame flavour... you'll be craving these on the regular!

Thrifty Savings

These spicy and sweet grilled mushroom "steak" strips are big on flavour AND on savings!

This recipe is so full of BBQ feeling and costs us approximately: CAD $7.10 using 4 portobello mushrooms and serving about 4 people.

We love that this recipe saves roughly $4.94 - $6.50 vs. using 1 pound flank steak.

  • Using steak from our wholesale store this recipe would cost us approximately: CAD $12.04 and...
  • With steak from our local grocery store it would cost us around: CAD $13.60.
  • And... most recipes that serve 4 use closer to 1 ½ pounds of steak!

Marinating The Mushrooms

I can tell you... I am NOT a raw mushroom fan! But these have a crispy grilled outside, a soft inside, and SO much flavour that I will eat these any day!

The great thing about mushrooms is... they are sponges! Allowing them to soak in a flavourful marinade for just 10 minutes infuses them with tons of flavour. They are a far cry from the rubbery raw mushrooms I'm not a huge fan of.

Large portobello mushrooms are our favourite for this recipe. To prepare the mushrooms:

  • Don't wash your mushrooms! Gently brush away any dirt with your hands or a vegetable brush. I would always wash mushrooms with water which resulted in soggy mushrooms and didn't help my lack of enthusiasm for them!
  • Remove the stems by gripping them and slowly twisting. You will feel the stem loosen from the top of the mushroom for a clean separation. Alternatively, you can slice the mushroom stem off with a knife.
  • Reserve the stems for another recipe! We love to toss them into a breakfast scramble the next morning!
  • Flip the mushroom so the top is up and slice into ½" thick slices (resembling a steak strip).
  • Prepare your marinade, pour it over the mushroom strips, make sure all the strips are coated evenly, and let them marinate for at least 10 minutes.

Ingredients For Grilled Mushroom "Steak" Strips

The tasty, savoury, spicy, and sweet marinade is made up of:

Top down view of a prepared marinade in a small dish. A spoon with drippy tahini lays on the white tray with fresh finger, a hot red chilli pepper, maple syrup, tahini, and sesame oil.
  1. Salty, Savoury Tamari (or soy sauce of your choice)
  2. Maple Syrup for the sweetness
  3. A Hot Red Chilli Pepper For the Spice
  4. Tahini and Sesame Oil For the Sesame Flavour
  5. And Ginger For Even More Peppery, Sweet, Spicy Flavour!

30 Minutes To Grilled Mushroom Steak Strips

  • About 10 minutes to prepare your mushrooms and whisk up the marinade.
  • 10 minutes to allow the mushrooms to soak in the marinade.
  • And about 10 minutes to grill up the mushrooms!

*The grilling time will vary depending on how many mushrooms you can fit in your grill pan without overcrowding them. They take 3-5 minutes on each side. We only have a tiny grill pan so we have to grill the mushrooms in 2-3 batches, but if you have a larger pan... 10 minutes is all you need!

*Feel free to try this same marinade with sliced shiitake mushrooms for a smaller strip, or even use thick oyster mushrooms!

Let us know in the comments below if you make these grilled mushroom "steak" strips and how you serve them! We love making them into a fajita with our maple tahini dressing!

Description

Top fajitas and Asian inspired bowls with these sesame grilled mushroom "steak" strips! Spicy & sweet, cost saving, quick, and so tasty!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 portobello mushroom caps*
  • ½ tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • ¼ cup tamari (or soy sauce if not gluten free)
  • 1 tbsp tahini
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger
  • 1 tsp fresh minced garlic
  • ½ - 1 red chilli pepper, seeds removed (sub ¼ teaspoon chilli flakes, ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper, or adjust to desired heat)

*Fresh ingredients you need that are not part of our pantry and freezer tips.

Instructions

  1. Prepare mushroom caps by gently brushing any dirt away (do not use water as it will make the mushrooms soggy). Gently twist the stems out and reserve for another use (like a breakfast scramble the next morning!). Slice the mushrooms into ½” thick strips. Place the mushrooms in a large dish while you prepare the marinade.
  2. Combine all the marinade ingredients. You can either finely chop the ginger, garlic, and chilli or add all the ingredients to your blender to create a smoother marinade.
  3. Pour the marinade over the mushrooms and gently turn them to make sure the marinade coats all sides. Allow the mushrooms to sit in the marinade for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Heat a grill pan on medium high heat (you want to make sure it’s hot enough that the mushrooms sizzle). When ready, add the mushroom strips (careful, the oil in the dressing may spray if the pan is too hot). Add as many mushroom strips as can comfortably fit in your pan without overcrowding.
  5. Grill on both sides for 3-5 minutes. You should have nice grill lines, a softer centre and nicely charred and crispy edges.
  6. Serve immediately with desired sides like mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. Serve over rice or noodles for an Asian inspired dish. Or, load up these fajitas!

Notes

*Cost Comparison: CAD $7.10 vs $12.04 for 1 lb flank steak at a wholesale price and $13.60 for flank steak at our local grocery store. That’s a difference of at least CAD $4.94 and up to $6.50!

*Feel free to boost up or tone down the spiciness to your preference.

*Save any leftover marinade and use it to flavour another dish or spoon it over rice or noodles as a tasty sauce!

My wife and I have recently been trying to eat less red meat and we actually loved these. Makes the transition so much easier when the food is easy to make and tastes great. Will make again.
