This easy BBQ sauce recipe is our favourite go-to barbecue sauce! Ready in just 15 minutes, spicy, and full of chipotle barbecue flavour! It's:

Made In One Pot
15 Minutes
Spicy
Thick

And Will Have You Craving All Your Barbecue Favourites!

Ingredients For This Easy BBQ Sauce

Top down view of tomato puree, tomato paste, chipotle peppers, molasses, and apple cider vinegar displayed on a white tray.

This BBQ sauce from scratch is made from ingredients that are easy to store in your pantry. We love using stewed tomatoes as opposed to ketchup and we keep this recipe mustard free too! Mustard makes its way into many sauces and dressings so if you're like me and you have a strange mustard allergy... not to fear! Making your own is quick, easy, and so tasty!

  • Crushed Tomatoes (or Passata)
  • Tomato Paste (store leftovers in the freezer and scoop out as you need!)
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Molasses
  • Liquid smoke, paprika, and cumin for the seasonings
  • And chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for all that spicy barbecue taste!

*I always avoided using tomato paste in recipes because they always seemed to call for 1-2 tablespoons and the rest of the can would go to waste. Storing leftover tomato paste was a game changer for me! Simply scoop it into a freezer safe jar and scrape out what you need whenever a recipe calls for a small amount!

The Spicy BBQ Flavour

These ingredients are some of our favourite flavour boosters to have on hand!

I would never add chipotle peppers or adobo sauce when I would come across them in recipes. I never had a can on hand and would just replace the heat with another ingredient. You can absolutely make this BBQ sauce with a different spicy ingredient like cayenne pepper or opt for a sweeter sauce with maple syrup. BUT!!! Once I took the leap and decided to buy a can... I was hooked. Talk about flavour booster!

The chipotle peppers are the star! They just smell like barbecue. They taste like barbecue. And they are so easy to keep in your pantry. The best part is... they keep well in the fridge once opened! Whenever we open a can and use 1 or 2 peppers, we transfer the leftover to a glass jar with a lid and store the rest in the fridge for a few months!

  • Chipotle Peppers
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Smoked Paprika
  • And Cumin

Provide all the rich, smoky, barbecue flavour that makes this sauce sing!

Just 15 Minutes

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan
  2. Heat over medium low until the sauce starts to bubble
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes to combine all the flavours
  4. Then blend the sauce for a smooth texture and enjoy!

Recipe Cost For Easy BBQ Sauce

This easy BBQ sauce recipe costs us approximately: CAD $4.29 for 500ml. That's roughly CAD $0.86/100ml.

Most store-bought BBQ sauce ranges from CAD $0.70 - $1.11 per 100ml so our version is quite comparable!

For an incredibly tasty barbecue sauce that we can make as spicy or as mild as we'd like... we choose our sauce any day!

Description

This easy BBQ sauce recipe is our quick go-to! Ready in 15 minutes. Chipotle peppers pack the heat and BBQ flavour! Ketchup & mustard free.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups passata (or crushed and strained tomatoes)
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp vegan worcestershire sauce (see notes for substitute)
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, diced (about 2 tbsp)
  • 2 tsp liquid smoke
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp salt

*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!

Instructions

*Watch the video below to see us make this BBQ sauce for our Ultimate BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich!

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. When your sauce starts to lightly bubble, reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on for 10 minutes.
  2. Blend the sauce using an immersion blender or stand up blender for a smooth texture and enjoy!
  3. Keeps well in a sealed container in the fridge for up to one week. I haven’t tried keeping it longer but you could try to freeze it in ice cube molds to preserve it longer.

Notes

Cost Comparison: CAD $4.29 for 500ml ($0.86/100ml) vs CAD $0.70-$1.11/100ml for most store-bought BBQ sauce.

If you don't have vegan worcestershire sauce you can use tamari or soy sauce instead. This option will be saltier so you could reduce the salt in the recipe by a bit. Additionally, you could add a bit of a sweetener (start with ½ teaspoon maple syrup or ¼ teaspoon cane sugar) to make up for the sugars in the worcestershire.

If you don’t have chipotle peppers on hand you can substitute the heat with 3 teaspoon chilli garlic sauce and ½ teaspoon or more cayenne pepper. About half of a red Thai chilli pepper would work too!

Store leftover chipotle peppers and adobo sauce in a sealable jar in your fridge. They keep well for 1 - 2 months. Likewise, freeze leftover tomato paste in a freezer safe jar and scoop out what you need whenever you need a tablespoon or so. (Freezing 1 tablespoon amounts of tomato paste in an ice cube tray and then transferring the frozen cubes to a freezer safe bag or container makes for simple portions!)
