What Is Golden Milk And Why Is It So Powerful
Golden milk has been made in India for centuries. In its simplest form, it’s made with turmeric and warmed milk. Manali, at the Cooking With Manali blog, shares her experience of her mother making the two ingredient healing drink. Manali now adds extra spices and shares her recipe for Masala Haldi Doodh here!
Is turmeric part of your pantry?
Turmeric only became a staple for Bryan and I a few years ago. This colourful root, which is part of the ginger family, quickly became one of our most frequently used spices.
Although turmeric is most often used in curries, we slide it into all kinds of dishes! Our go-to breakfast scramble gets its yellow colour from turmeric and we even add it to our Mexican Queso.
Turmeric has such a long list of health benefits!
- Its anti-inflammatory properties aid in the prevention of, or management of; cancer, heart disease, alzheimer’s, digestive disorders, and chronic pain.
- Its antiviral properties help keep the colds away.
- And besides the joy you get from its tastiness, turmeric has been shown to boost your mood and may improve symptoms of depression.

Other Ingredients In Our Golden Milk
In addition to the benefits of turmeric, we sprinkle some other gems into our tasty golden milk.
- Ginger & Cinnamon: also loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
- A pinch of black pepper: to help your body absorb the benefits of the turmeric. I promise you won’t taste it!
- And maple syrup: for a hint of sweetness.
Between you and me… if I’m making this golden milk for both Bryan and I… maple syrup makes an appearance. But, if I’m making this turmeric latte just for me… I amp up the spice!
I like to omit the maple syrup and add a pinch of cayenne! If I’m goin’ spicy… I’m goin’ all the way. I love the warm turmeric, the kick of ginger, the spicy cinnamon, and the intense cayenne.

How To Make Turmeric Golden Milk
- One Pot
- Milk
- Spices
- 5-7 Minutes Until Warm
- Strain If Desired
Not a bad way to sneak in all the health benefits is it? Quick, easy, and tasty!
I personally, don’t bother straining this milk. But, if you’re not a fan of a tasting a bit of graininess from the spices, feel free to pour the milk through a sieve as you transfer it to your mug.
Recipe Cost
2 servings of our tasty turmeric golden milk cost us CAD $1.54 ($0.77/serving)!
Not too shabby for a warm, comforting, tasty, and immune boosting latte!
If we were to order golden milk from a cafe it would likely cost us: CAD $5-$7 per serving.

PrintTasty Turmeric Golden Milk To Keep You Powerful
- Total Time: 7 minutes
- Yield: 2 servings 1x
- Diet: Vegan
Description
Warming, spicy, satisfying, and such a powerful health booster! Get cozy with this tasty turmeric golden milk and drink in all its goodness!
Ingredients
- 3 cups plant milk of choice (soy or oat are our choices)
- 2 tsp ground turmeric (see notes if using fresh)
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon (or 1 cinnamon stick)
- ⅛ tsp ground ginger
- pinch of black pepper (for better turmeric absorption)
- optional: ½ – 1 teaspoon maple syrup (adjust to taste and depending on sweetness of your chosen milk)
*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!
Instructions
- Pour your milk into a saucepan and set over medium-low heat. Whisk your spices into the milk. Adding a pinch of black pepper helps your body to better absorb the benefits of the turmeric and you won’t be able to taste the pepper.
- Once you start seeing wisps of steam coming off your milk, after about 5 minutes, it’s heated through. You want to avoid it boiling as that can cause your milk to develop a skin on top.
- If you want foam on top, you can quickly use an immersion blender or even carefully transfer the hot liquid to your standing blender if it can process hot foods. Alternatively, whisking it vigorously will provide some foam.
- If you don’t like having the spices gather at the bottom of your latte you can strain the liquid as you pour it into your mug.
- Serve hot, with the cinnamon stick if desired, and enjoy!
Notes
*Approximate Cost: CAD $1.59 ($0.78/serving) vs. CAD $5 – $7 each if purchased from a cafe.
*For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper and omit the maple syrup.
*If using fresh turmeric and ginger. You can try 2 tablespoon fresh turmeric and about ¾ tablespoon fresh ginger. Strain the milk through a sieve to serve.

Thank you! I do find it simple to prepare and so much more cost effective than getting them from a cafe! Let me know if you give it a try!

Delicious and comforting. I used honey instead of maple syrup and a combination of coconut and oat milk. I want to try Ginger and lemon next time too. Thanks
Kathryn Alexandre
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I haven’t tried lemon in this one yet. Let me know how you like when you give it a try! You might enjoy my ginger turmeric tea if you haven’t tried it. It’s not a latte but has ginger, turmeric, and lemon. Comforting in more of a tonic for colds way haha.
