This one is a blast from the past. Like most kids, I wouldn’t complain if I somehow managed to have a Nutella sandwich packed in my school lunch. Although it didn’t happen very often, it obviously left a mark on me because I set out to create a homemade dairy-free version of Nutella. This vegan “Nutella” sandwich is the adult version of my childhood favourite.

Does it get better than that?
Homemade “Nutella”
Take a look at my post dedicated to this downright delicious chocolate hazelnut spread. Follow along with my recipe to make your own homemade “Nutella”.
This spread is incredibly easy to make and is ready in 20 minutes. Most of that time is spent roasting the hazelnuts so it really couldn’t be simpler.
For my recipe I roast 1 cup raw hazelnuts at 375 degrees F for about 10 minutes. You know they are done when your kitchen fills with that delicious toasty smell and the hazelnuts are noticeably browned.
Once the hazelnuts are cool enough to handle, remove as many of the skins as possible by rubbing the hazelnuts between your hands. You won’t be able to get them all but less of these skins will mean a smoother chocolate spread.
Next, add the roasted hazelnuts to a food processor and grind into a fine meal.
To the ground hazelnuts, add:
½ teaspoon vanilla extract,
¼ teaspoon sea salt,
⅛ cup cocoa powder,
2-3 tablespoon maple syrup,
¼ cup melted dairy-free chocolate chips,
and about ¼ cup plant milk to help the spread blend smoothly.
Once the spread has reached your desired consistency, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate. This spread will last well in your fridge for at least 2 weeks.
Using oil in place of the plant milk could extend the life of this spread by a bit. I prefer using plant milk for two reasons. The first being, I can avoid adding extra oil. The second being, that plant milk adds even more creaminess to this chocolate spread.
Sandwich Ingredients
To create my adult version of the Nutella sandwich on white bread I craved as a child, I use:
- 1 toasted slice of my homemade sourdough bread for an open-faced sandwich
- Homemade “Nutella”
- Peanut Butter
- Sliced banana
And I like to top my sandwich with some ground flaxseed, toasted walnuts, and a few cacao nibs.
You can, of course, be creative with your sandwich and use your favourite toppings. Also, feel free to make a traditional closed sandwich and not an open-faced version!
Recipe Cost
If you are a frequent visitor to our blog you will know that I price out all of my recipes in order to give you an idea of my costs. Often, my recipes are more cost effective or very similar in price to store-bought options or more traditional (non-vegan) versions of what I make.
This vegan “Nutella” sandwich costs me about $0.60 CAD not including the bread. I tend to use my homemade sourdough bread but if I were to purchase a loaf of sourdough I could expect to add around $0.75 to my cost.
A whole 330 gram batch of my homemade “Nutella” costs us around $3.65 or roughly $1.10 per 100 grams. This cost is on par with store-bought Nutella for me and is considerably more affordable than a store-bought dairy-free “Nutella”.
Let me know in the comments how you top your vegan “Nutella” sandwich! Make sure to drizzle your homemade “nutella” on these Caramelized Cinnamon Plantains or these Whole Wheat Crepes.

I am all over this! Can’t wait to try it. I’ve made your vegan nutella recipe before and it’s so good. Thanks kathryn!

haha I hope you love it! Hard to go wrong with “nutella” whatever you do with it right? Thank you so much Macy. Let me know when you make it!

Looks luscious! Do you use semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips? Definitely making this. I’m thinking of using at least 72% dark chocolate and then sweeten it to taste.
Kathryn Alexandre
My chocolate chips are semi-sweet so if you use a darker chocolate chip then you may just want to add a bit more maple syrup to the homemade “nutella” spread to sweeten it to your taste. You could blend the melted chips and sweetener etc with the ground hazelnuts to start and then finish it off with just enough plant milk (or neutral oil) to thin the spread once you’re happy with the level of sweetness. This way you don’t add too much liquid. The spread does firm up a lot in the fridge though so if it is a little on the runny side to start it will firm up nicely. Let me know how you like it when you give it a try!
