These smoky maple spiced almonds use just 5 ingredients and are ready after just 10 minutes in the oven. This simple recipe is a great way to add big flavour to your snack spread.
Ingredients For Maple Spiced Almonds
It is so simple to roast nuts that I most often prefer to buy raw nuts and then roast and flavour them at home. Typically, buying raw nuts will be more cost effective. For instance using raw nuts for this recipe brings my recipe cost to $1.46 Canadian per 100 grams. If I purchase roasted and spiced nuts from my grocery store they cost me at least $2.50 per 100 grams. So, flavouring nuts at home can save you a few pennies and you will only be out a few extra minutes of your time.
This smoky maple spiced almonds recipe requires:
- A cup of raw almonds
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- One teaspoon smoked paprika
- Half a teaspoon liquid smoke
- And just a dash of salt
What Is Liquid Smoke?
If you’re not familiar with liquid smoke, this natural products adds a huge smoky kick to dishes. If you’ve ever had a hickory smoked barbecue sauce, smoked ham, or smoked salmon… you’ve likely had liquid smoke.
Liquid smoke is literally, smoke and water. The smoke from burning wood is captured, condensed, and filtered. If you’re interested in any of the research around the safety of liquid smoke you can read a more in-depth analysis of the various studies conducted in Dr. Michael Greger’s article on Nutrition.Org. And for a lighter read, The Spruce Eats has a nice overview of liquid smoke.
A small dash is all you need for big flavour and I use it in my:
Smoky Sun-Dried Tomato “Bacon” Bits
Smoky Beet Pasta
Spicy Chipotle Pulled Jackfruit
Vegan “Smoked Salmon” Carrot Lox
To name a few!
I have found that this condiment can be pricey online but a small bottle from my grocery store costs me under $3 and lasts for most of the year!
Method
These almonds need only 10 minutes in the oven!
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
- Coat the raw almonds in the seasonings.
- Spread the spiced almonds in a single layer on the baking tray.
- Bake for 7 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and stir the almonds around to coat in any excess seasonings.
- Bake for an additional 3 minutes.
- Remove and allow to cool fully on the baking tray.
Storing Maple Spiced Almonds
Keeping the almonds in a single layer will ensure that they don’t stick together while roasting and cooling.
It’s important to allow them to cool fully on the tray before adding them to a bowl or storage container. Any excess moisture in the almonds will cause them to get sticky.
You can store these spiced almonds in an air-tight container on the counter for up to one week. If longer storage is required these will keep well in the fridge.
