The simplest naturally sweetened snow cones! I confess, I did think that I had invented a brand new recipe when I happened to add frozen watermelon, lime, and ginger to a blender. Instead of melting immediately into a juice, a perfectly icy snow cone texture appeared. Trying to suppress my excitement I turned to the internet and realized that I had not invented something new at all. If this is new to you however, then you can credit me for introducing you to the watermelon snow cone!

A fun and colourful frozen treat!
Ingredients For Watermelon Snow Cones
The only ingredient you really need for a watermelon snow cone is frozen watermelon.
I like to add:
- Lime juice for brightness.
- A touch of maple syrup for a bit of extra caramel-like sweetness.
- And ginger for the adults who want an extra sharp zing.

I tend to cube and freeze my watermelon in advance. Watch the video linked below the recipe card to see an easy way to cube a watermelon. Remember to freeze the cubes in a single layer on a sheet pan in your freezer for 1-2 hours and transfer to a freezer safe bag or container once frozen. This prevents all of the cubes from freezing into one big block and makes it easier to scoop what you need.
Method
All you need is a blender and 5 minutes or less to make watermelon snow cones.
- Simply add the frozen watermelon cubes to a blender.
- Squeeze in the lime juice and add the maple syrup and grated ginger.
- Pulse the blender to break the watermelon down into an icy snow cone texture.
- Scoop the icy mixture into bowls patting it into a mound.
- Enjoy while frozen with a spoon and straw!

To make this recipe using fresh watermelon:
- Blend the fresh watermelon with the additional ingredients.
- Pour the mixture into a loaf tin or casserole dish of some sort.
- Freeze until solid.
- Use a fork to shave the frozen treat into icy crystals and scoop into bowls.
Recipe Cost For Watermelon Snow Cones
Thankfully, watermelons are in season and at their lowest price when we need a frozen treat to escape the heat. In season, my cost for a large watermelon will typically range from $4.99 to $7.99 Canadian.
The cost for a snow cone at a fair or festival is usually at least $2 per serving. Since a large watermelon could provide at least 12 snow cones this can be a thrifty way to cool down with a fun and naturally sweetened frozen treat!

If you love this recipe you should let your frozen watermelon defrost for just a few minutes and make a Watermelon Slushie instead of a snow cone!
