This watermelon slushie recipe is such a fun treat for a summer gathering! Keep it simple for the kids or put your own twist on it for the adults.

Ingredients For This Watermelon Slushie Recipe

All you really need to make a watermelon slushie is frozen watermelon. Some extra sweetener like maple syrup helps to bring the flavour closer to those very sweet convenience store slushies.

I love to add lime juice and grated ginger to brighten the flavour and add some extra zing. For kids I would likely omit the ginger but if yours would love it then I highly recommend adding some in.

Top down view of cubed frozen watermelon in a small dish on a white tray. Slices of fresh watermelon, a halved lime, a teaspoon of maple syrup, and a knob of ginger surround.

Finally, use some water or another liquid to thin out the slushie and get that perfect balance between icy and melty.

This is where you could get extra creative. Using a flavoured sparkling water could give these slushies more of a flavour boost. Sometimes I add in our homemade kombucha for a touch of fizziness and of course... an alcoholic beverage of your choice could be a fun addition for the adults.

Method

The main difference between this watermelon slushie recipe and my watermelon snow cone is letting the watermelon defrost for a few minutes.

  1. Add frozen watermelon cubes to a blender and let them sit for at least 5 minutes to defrost a bit.
  2. Add in the lime, sweetener, and grated ginger if using.
  3. Pulse the blender to break down the watermelon and add as much liquid as you need to create your perfect slushie texture.

The heat produced by the blender as it runs will melt the slushie some more and you may need to scrape the mixture around in the blender to encourage it to melt.

Scoop into glasses and serve with a straw and spoon. Garnish with a wedge of watermelon, a slice of lime, and some fresh mint would be nice too.

Recipe Cost For Watermelon Slushies

A single serving of this watermelon slushie recipe costs me around $2 Canadian when watermelons are in season and at their lowest price.

If we were to buy slushies they would cost between $2 and $5 depending on whether they are from a convenience store or ice cream shop.

Description

A refreshing watermelon slushie recipe to cool you down! You can omit the ginger for the kids but keep the extra zing for the adults!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups frozen watermelon (520 g)*
  • 1 small lime, juiced*
  • 2 tsp maple syrup (or more as desired)
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • ½ cup water, if needed to loosen (can use sparkling water, kombucha, or an alcoholic beverage of choice)

*Fresh ingredients you need that are not part of our pantry and freezer tips.

Instructions

  1. Add the frozen watermelon to a blender and allow to defrost for at least 5 minutes.
  2. Squeeze in the lime and add the maple syrup and ginger. (Feel free to omit the ginger for kids who may not like the sharper taste).
  3. Pulse the blender to break down the watermelon and add as much liquid as you need to reach your desired slushie consistency. The heat produced by the blender will melt the slushie more as you blend and you may need to scrape the blender down to move the mixture around and encourage it to melt.
  4. Scoop the slushie into glasses. Serve with a straw (and spoon if desired) plus any garnishes like a fresh watermelon wedge, slice of lime, or fresh mint.

Notes

Approximate Cost: A single serving of this slushie will likely cost me around $2 when watermelon is in season and at its lowest cost. If we were to purchase a single slushie our cost would range from $2 - $5 depending on whether it is from a gas station/convenience store or a specialty ice cream shop. This can be a thrifty way to offer a fun and naturally sweetened cool treat!

A flavoured sparkling water, kombucha, or even a bit of an alcoholic beverage for the adults can be a fun way to play with the flavour of this recipe and make it your own!
