How To Freeze Bananas
“Nice cream” is the name given to “ice” cream made creamy entirely by blending frozen bananas. Nice cream is dairy-free but the creaminess of the frozen banana means the texture feels more decadent than a sorbet!
So… how do you freeze bananas? I thought I could only make muffins or bread with ripe bananas… if only I’d known to freeze them! I could have been making this incredibly easy “nice” cream so much earlier!
Here are some tips:
- Freezing yellow spotted bananas provides the best taste and texture. Yellow bananas will have a less creamy texture and be less sweet. Ripe bananas will have a mushier, icier texture and the taste will be more overpowering.
- Peel your bananas before freezing.
- Tear or slice them into smaller chunks.
- If freezing a larger quantity… lay the pieces of banana in a single layer on a baking tray and place in the freezer for a few hours until frozen. Then transfer the pieces to a freezer safe bag or container. This will ensure your pieces of banana don’t stick together!
How To Make This Raspberry Nice Cream Recipe
Are you ready for how easy this is?
- Add your 3 frozen bananas to a food processor or high powered blender,
- Toss in ½ cup frozen raspberries,
- And blend until smooth!
That’s it!
We use our food processor for nice cream because the larger bowl and blades blend the frozen fruit with less effort than our blender. IF you have a high powered blender with a tamper you should be able to make this nice cream without adding any milk to help the fruit blend.
*When we make this recipe in our blender we have to either wait a few minutes and allow the fruit to defrost just slightly OR add a splash of plant milk to help the fruit break down.
Recipe Cost
This raspberry nice cream recipe costs us approximately: CAD $1.15 for at least 650 ml!
That’s roughly $0.18/100 ml vs. store-bought ice cream at $0.33 – $1.50/100 ml.
AND… if we buy dairy-free ice cream; those options typically cost us $1.20 – $1.50/100ml. That means this raspberry nice cream is a pretty satisfying, thrifty option!

Description
2 ingredients & no ice cream maker needed! This raspberry nice cream recipe is a perfect quick, refreshing treat! Dairy-free & no added sugar!
Ingredients
- 3 frozen bananas, chopped into chunks
- ½ cup frozen raspberries
- optional: splash of plant milk to help it blend if needed
- optional: dairy-free chocolate chips
- optional: ½ tablespoon maple syrup
- optional: ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!
Instructions
*To ensure your bananas are fully frozen it is best to freeze them at least 24 hours in advance. I find yellow, spotted bananas before they turn too ripe to provide the best taste and texture. Slice the bananas into chunks before freezing to make blending easier.
- Add frozen banana chunks and raspberries to your food processor.
- Pulse until broken down and blend smooth. Stopping as needed to move the fruit around and help it blend fully.
- If your machine is struggling to blend the fruit you can wait a couple minutes and allow the fruit to soften slightly or add a splash of plant milk. Just know that the more milk added the less firm the nice cream will be.
- Freeze in a freezer safe container. If it won’t be staying in the freezer for too long I’ve re-used yogurt containers or even frozen the ice cream in a loaf pan lined with parchment paper.
- You can enjoy this right away as a very soft serve type of “ice cream” bowl. Waiting 4-6 hours will give you a firmer soft serve and freezing overnight will produce a very firm nice cream. If you like this recipe, try our super creamy Peanut Butter Swirl Nice Cream and our Mint Chip Nice Cream!
