The Best Warm Cinnamon Apples

Jump to Recipe·5 from 1 review
Warm, tender apple slices coated in cinnamon and a dusting of icing sugar are piled on a pink saucer. Apples, cinnamon sticks and another plate of warm cinnamon fried apples sit in the background. Cinnamon, maple syrup, and cinnamon is scattered around the plate.

Honestly... warm cinnamon apples are a game changer! They are so simple, so quick, and so worth it! If you're wondering how to take oats, pancakes, desserts, ice cream to the next level? BINGO! This is it!

These cinnamon apples are:

4 Ingredients
1 Skillet
10-15 Minutes Max
Smell Like Happiness
And Bring Instant Comfort And Joy

It's true. I'm literally smiling just thinking about them.

Using Frozen Apples

I make these all the time using apples I've frozen. I never would have thought to freeze apple slices even a year ago but now they are a staple in our freezer.

If your local grocery store has a program where they sell discounted produce either through an app or in-store, you're likely to find bags of apples amoung the items. Often, they are still in perfectly usable condition and this is where freezing them is the answer!

Wash Them
Cut In Quarters
Core & Deseed
Slice
Lay Flat On A Baking Sheet
Freeze In A Single Layer
Then Store When Frozen!

Top down view of half an apple thinly sliced on a cutting board with the core discarded to the side, the other half of the apple facing up, and a full apple to the side.

Sure, this will take a bit of time BUT you'll be saving money, saving good food from the landfill, and you'll have your apple supply ready for these warm cinnamon apples, our chocolate peanut butter smoothie, or homemade applesauce!

If using frozen apples for this recipe, I don't even bother with melting vegan butter in the skillet. The apples will release water as they start cooking and shouldn't stick. You can drain this liquid before adding your cinnamon and maple syrup but I often keep it. The liquid thickens a bit with the maple syrup and makes a super tasty sweet "cinnamony" sauce.

Which Apples Are Best

I use any kind of apples for this recipe. A sweet red variety like Royal Gala will definitely give you great results but... they're cooked apples, with cinnamon, and maple syrup... they're gonna be tasty.

Depending on the sweetness of the apples used, and your own preference, feel free to add more sweetener. If you don't have maple syrup you can sub with a teaspoon or two of cane sugar or whatever sweetener you have in your pantry.

Spicing It Up

Toss in a few pinches of your favourite fall spices to give these apples extra oomph. Nutmeg, allspice, ginger, or your handy pumpkin pie spice will have you salivating before you even serve these up!

They make the perfect topping for our carrot cake oatmeal!

At roughly CAD $0.74 for this recipe these warm cinnamon apples are an absolute delight! We've even served them up for company with our Fluffiest 5-Minute Whipped Cream for a super tasty, super quick, and super satisfying dessert.

Give these a try and let us know in the comments below how you served them and how you make them your own!

Description

Soft, warm, sauteed cinnamon apples. Quick, only 4 ingredients, and perfect for topping pancakes, oatmeal, french toast, and ice cream!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 apples cored and thinly sliced (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ tsp vegan butter (optional)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 ½ tsp maple syrup

*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!

Instructions

*You can use any apple variety. If serving these for company as a dessert it is best to choose a firm apple variety like Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Gala, or Granny Smith. A softer apple might fall apart more easily.

  1. If using fresh apples, cut them into quarters, remove the core, then slice thinly.
  2. Preheat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. *If you’re using frozen apple slices they will let out quite a bit of water as they cook so there’s no need for the butter.
  3. If using butter, once it starts to sizzle add the apple slices to the skillet and stir. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently until nice and softened. If using frozen apple slices you can drain the liquid that is released if you’d like; but I like to keep it saucy. *If your skillet has a lid you can cover the apples to speed up the cooking time, stirring occasionally.
  4. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the apples and stir until they are nicely coated. Drizzle the maple syrup and cook, stirring, for another minute or so.
  5. Remove from heat and serve immediately. They are perfect on oatmeal, pancakes, desserts, or with a scoop of ice cream!

Notes

*Cost Comparison: CAD $0.74

*If using frozen apple slices, you can drain the liquid they release during cooking or keep it as a nice “cinnamony” sauce!

*Feel free to add more maple syrup if you like your apples sweeter or are using a variety of apple that is more sour.

*If you don’t have maple syrup on hand, sub with 1-2 teaspoon cane sugar or any sweetener of your choice.

Ok, I was craving something sweet but I'm trying to be healthier so I put the ice cream back in the fridge and made these apples. The ice cream would have been great on them! But even on their own they felt like a treat and I didn't feel like I had to add extra sugar. It's a bit of a mental game but I do think I could get used to having these more often cuz they still felt like a treat.

Awesome! I'm really glad these felt like a treat. Thank you so much for letting me know and you might like my cinnamon plantains as well. Those are two simple fruit "desserts" that I've even served dinner guests and everyone is usually pleasantly surprised by how much they satisfy a sweet tooth. I have a pretty strong sweet tooth so I definitely need these in my life!
