Are you ready for this? Because I’m ready! Let me tell you… I was not jumping on the avocado toast band wagon. I have to say, I’m not the biggest fan of avocado unless it’s masked with other flavours. And well… miso paste for the win! This miso avocado toast is a must try!
It’s:
So Savoury
Naturally Salty
And Seriously Tasty!
There’s a wonderful cafe in a small town about an hour from us that gave us the inspiration for this beauty. I saw miso butter as an ingredient in their avocado toast and thought… that sounds like a strong enough and tasty enough flavour for me to give this a try.
And I’m sure glad I did! When that version of avocado toast was replaced by another on their menu, we set out to try our own combo. Our version combines:
- The unique flavour and texture of avocado
- With the creaminess of hummus
- A bit of bite from lemony sauteed spinach
- Toasty, melty miso butter
- And a perfectly savoury and salty miso glaze!
Miso Paste
Before miso paste became a staple in our fridge, my only point of reference for miso was the tasty miso soup I’d get at Japanese restaurants. But as it happens, the paste is:
Easily found at most large grocery stores
It lasts in your fridge for months
It packs a huge burst of flavour
And a little goes a long way
Miso is a traditional Japanese seasoning made from fermented soybeans that has a deep umami flavour. Did you know that umami is one of the five basic tastes? I think that was left out of my elementary school lessons! I confess, it wasn’t until quite recently that I decided to look into this “umami” flavour I kept hearing talk of.
Well it sure is tasty! Foods like miso that have an umami flavour are characterized as tasting “savoury” and “meaty”. So it’s no wonder that having some miso paste in your fridge comes in handy when you want to add a burst of flavour to:
Soups
Tofu
Noodle Dishes
And This Avocado Toast!

Recipe Cost
Canada doesn’t quite have the climate for growing avocados! So that means this imported fruit is a little pricier than say, the apples we have in plenty.
As such, this meal is for when we’re feeling a little fancy. It’s perfect for when we happen to have a nice loaf of bread and treat ourselves to a fancier brunch!
That being said, making avocado toast at home packs huge savings vs. getting it out at a restaurant. As this recipe is pretty darn restaurant worthy in our books we gladly accept the savings!
Our miso avocado toast costs us approximately, CAD $6.69 ($3.35/serving). Considering avocado toast on a menu will likely be anywhere from CAD $7-$11 each, this version ain’t too shabby.
So if you have some miso in your fridge, mix it with some butter, make it into a glaze, and devour this savoury loaded toast! If you don’t have some miso, take a stroll down the refrigerated “natural foods” or “international foods” aisle at your grocery store and keep your eyes peeled for this gem of a flavour booster!

- 2 slices of sourdough or seed bread (or 4 depending on the width of your loaf)*
- 2 tsp vegan butter
- 2 tsp miso paste
- 1 avocado (sliced)*
- 2 cups packed spinach*
- 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions
- Slice your bread into nice thicker slices. In a small dish, combine vegan butter and 1 teaspoon miso paste. Stir together until nicely combined. Butter your sourdough slices with the miso butter mixture.

- While your bread is toasting, prepare your avocado.
- Remove your toasted bread and add spinach to the skillet with a splash of lemon juice. Stir and cook until just wilted. Remove from the heat.
- Top your bread with hummus, then spinach, then avocado.
