Every time we make our 5 Minute Oil-Free Mayonnaise we turn some of it into a homemade vegan spicy mayo! It's the perfect addition to poke bowls, sushi, or sushi burritos! This homemade spicy mayo recipe is quick, easy, and versatile. It's:

5 Minutes
Made All In Your Blender
Thick Enough To Use Right Away
And full Of Spicy, Toasty, Tastiness!

The Spicy Ingredient In Vegan Spicy Mayo

Just One Cookbook has an authentic Japanese Spicy Mayo recipe. Kewpie mayo is the most popular brand of Japanese mayonnaise used for spicy mayo. And the heat traditionally comes from Sriracha sauce.

This homemade spicy mayo recipe is built on a recipe we've developed from the ingredients we always have on hand. Take a look at our Pantry Tips page to see how we stock our kitchen with versatile essentials for recipes like this!

Our quick homemade spicy mayo recipe:

  1. Uses our Oil & Egg-Free Mayo as the base.
  2. We add heat with Chilli Garlic Sauce instead of Sriracha.
  3. And Sesame Oil adds a rich, toasty, umami flavour.

*You can absolutely use any mayonnaise you have on hand as your base. AND you can substitute the chilli garlic sauce for Sriracha or any other hot sauce you have!

Why We Love This Homemade Vegan Spicy Mayo

We love how quick and easy it is to blend up a mayonnaise from silken tofu!

Since creating spicy mayo is as simple as stirring in some spice and sesame oil, we opt for making a basic batch of mayonnaise. Then, we add spice to just the amount we need for that particular meal. We find that this way... any leftovers are more adaptable. We either make more spicy mayo the next day or use the mayo in a whole new way!

Recipe Cost

The base of this recipe... our 5 Minute Oil-Free Mayonnaise costs us roughly: CAD $2.15 for 300ml.

Our ratio for spicy mayo takes:

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise and adds,
  • 2 ½ teaspoon chilli garlic sauce,
  • And ½ teaspoon sesame oil.

This adds roughly $0.15 to the total cost. So, if we wanted to make a full 300ml batch of spicy mayo our total cost would be roughly: CAD $2.90 ($0.97/100ml).

  • If we purchased pre-made spicy mayo from our local grocery store our cost would be CAD $2.40/100ml.
  • And Kewpie mayo purchased online would cost us CAD $3.34/100ml.
  • Finding Kewpie mayo at a wholesale grocery store would certainly bring the cost down.

SO although our homemade vegan spicy mayo recipe is not authentic...

It does allow us to enjoy the flavour of spicy mayo while being a THRIFTY and VERSATILE option!

How To Use Spicy Mayo

Our favourite way to use our homemade spicy mayo is to drizzle it over our show-stopping Spicy "Tuna" Watermelon Poke Bowl!

We will certainly be creating more recipes with this tasty mayo! Homemade sushi, hand rolls, sushi burritos, and even a spicy mayo pasta salad come to mind!

Description

This homemade vegan spicy mayo recipe is adapted from our 5 minute oil-free mayo! Two simple ingredients add that spicy mayo flavour you love!

Ingredients

Units Scale

5 Minute Oil Free Mayo (makes 1 ¼ cups)

  • 300g silken tofu (or soft tofu)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • ¼ tsp wasabi or ½ - 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • ⅛ tsp garlic powder
  • ⅛ tsp sea salt

Spicy Mayo (for every ¼ cup of mayo add the following)

  • 2 ½ tsp chilli garlic sauce (less or more to taste, can substitute with sriracha sauce)
  • ½ tsp sesame oil

*All the ingredients for this recipe are from our pantry and freezer tips!

Instructions

  1. To make the oil-free mayo add the tofu, lemon juice, vinegar, wasabi, garlic powder, and sea salt to your blender. Blend until smooth (stopping to scrape down the sides of your blender if needed). *Alternatively, try whisking the ingredients by hand if you don’t have a machine.
  2. To make the whole batch of mayo into spicy mayo you can add about 4 tablespoon chilli garlic sauce and 2.5 teaspoon sesame oil (I would start with less spice, taste, and add more as desired). I find the ratio of 2.5 teaspoon chilli garlic sauce and ½ teaspoon sesame oil works really well in ¼ cup batches but start with a lesser amount and adjust it to your taste.
  3. The mayo will be thick enough to use immediately but if you allow it to chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours it will thicken even more. Try our spicy mayo drizzled over our Spicy "Tuna" Watermelon Poke Bowl!
  4. If you only use some of the mayo as a spicy mayo you can reserve the rest for use in recipes like our Like Lobster Roll, our Summery Coleslaw, or turn it into a chipotle mayo and serve alongside sweet potato fries. The possibilities are endless!
  5. Store in the fridge in an air-tight container for about 1 week.

Notes

Approximate Cost: CAD $2.15 for base mayo plus an extra $0.15 for every ¼ cup made into spicy mayo. Roughly $2.90 ($0.97/100ml) to make the whole batch into spicy mayo.

Store-bought spicy mayo from our local grocery store would cost us roughly: $2.40/100ml.
